I only keep goldfish in my pond. There are lots of babies in my pond which is a good thing because we were visited twice by the blue heron last month
Shhh! We're hiding. Be quiet everyone. That includes me. Shhh! Who's making that noise? Oh, it's me again...

Baby koi can grow to 4" in their first summer if pampered. It all depends on the kind of summer that you have and the room they have to grow in as well as feeding. My koi spawn in spawning mops the first week in June. Often a second time a week later. It is impossible for a hobbyist to raise the number of fry resulting from the thousands of eggs that are laid. I only raise about 200 a year on the average. I presently have about 50 eight inch koi in my main pond that are 2 years old and will have to be caught and sold next spring as they are crowding my pond making it hard to keep clean. I'll have to check my files for pics.

I've heard of young koi reaching 8" before fall but not common. They were being kept in green water which essentially is swimming in food and having massive amounts of water. As for breeding koi it's very simple and i've found it as easy as breeding convicts though the raising part is a little harder if you do it in aquariums. I used water lettuce or spawning mops for my goldfish. What colors are you breeding?

Thats more fun than knowing what you're going to get. Plus it opens you up to different genetic mutations. Like with birds crossing colors gives tonnes of possibilities of genetic freaks.
