What is a par meter?
For us it's a submersible device that measures Photosynthetic Available Radiation. Fancy term for how much light is reaching the coral. The newest term is PUR. Photosynthetic Usable Radiation.

Why not use a light meter?
You may find this link interesting. It will explain the difference between the two and the advantages of a PAR meter: http://www.advancedaquarist.com/2008/2/review

Hey Scott... if you hurry and get an order in to Bill it could likely show up at your door or mine as early as Monday when he delivers to my house.
lol nice sales pitch.. whats your cut!
i am on hold right now. not buying anything untill i have this ick issue cleared up.
bill where did you pick it up from and what was the cost?
Just an FYI, Coral Reef Shop loans one out for 10.00 a day. Seems reasonable but not sure if or how they calibrate it? The Apogee one Bills talks about is an awesome little unit.
